San Churro, Chatswood

Spanish hot chocolate
I love churros. How can you not love a long, crunchy, golden piece of deep fried carbs? It's so bad for you but so good. I had churros for the first time from the Spanish Donuts Van in the Queen Victoria Markets when I visited Melbourne ages ago. They are so much better than any regular old donut thanks to those super crispy edges. I'd heard good things about the San Churros stores in Melbourne and also the one in Glebe, so I was surprised when my brother told me his experience at the Chatswood franchise was incredibly disappointing. It's been open for a while now but I only recently got to try it out when catching up with my old friend Doona for a chat. A cup of hot chocolate and a churros seemed like a great idea.

A very good thing about San Churros is that it is open late. Not many places are in Sydney and I think that's a real pity. We spent an hour or so chatting over our Spanish hot chocolates while the rest of Westfield went dead around us. The hot chocolate was incredibly rich and thick with a distinct flavour from the spice but to be honest after a few sips it was just so thick that it coated the back of your mouth so i spent most of the time taking teeny tiny sips or licking it off the back of my spoon. I could not finish a whole cup, it was far too thick and rich for me!

Kid-sized churros
It's close to dinner time so we only share a kid-sized serving of churros, which comes with your choice of chocolate and sprinkles! Yay sprinkles! It's very cute, but I have to say that I am worried as soon as I see the look of the churros, it's not a very pretty sight. It smells like old oil. And it tastes of old oil. It's a pretty greasy affair and I'm quite disappointed. The chocolate and sprinkles were great though! The kid in me was pleased with that part. Not sure if they full sized churros are any better at the Chatswood store, I would definitely like to try the Glebe franchise instead since it sounds a lot better. I think these guys need to get some fresh oil into their deep fryer.

  2. It probably just was a bad day, it was at the end of the day and I think a batch of new oil would have made all the difference. Haha you better come with me then!
