I miss Malaysian food sooooooo much. It wasn't so bad when my Mum was visiting because she was constantly cooking curries, noodles, bah kuh teh, pumpkin kuih and other goodies. But now she's returned to the happy happy food land and I am left missing everything. Lucky for me, there is only a short train trip to Alice's to satisfy those Malaysian food cravings.
It's a miserable night, wet & freezing cold. A & I are so hungry that we go for a super early dinner at 6pm, which is when Alice's opens. A was expecting us to be the only people there that early but the place quickly fills up. The restaurant is very unfussy, there are lots of small tables as the place is mainly geared to its lunch business. A small wall sign advertises the Lunch and Weekend specials (assam laksa, yum!).
I don't usually feel right having roti canai anywhere in Sydney except for Mamak, but I have a real hankering for it so we decide to order it for comparison's sake ;) It is very decent, crispy and golden on the outside. You can choose either chicken or lamb curry. We choose the lamb and it is extremely tasty and full of big chunks of tender lamb meat.
A developed a strong love for nasi lemak while in KL so he chooses that for himself. It comes with beef rendang but I also hear the waitress tell the table next to us that you can get chicken rendang as well. The beef rendang is pretty good, packed full of flavour and the meat is very tender. The coconut rice was okay, but the sambal was fantastic: extra dark and spicy with a smoky & concentrated prawn flavour.
I order the Hainanese chicken, and receive the most enormous portion of chicken and rice. The rice smells and tastes great, though Ginger and Spice still top my list of favourite chicken rices. I love the generous amount of garlic and soy drizzled all over the meat. I am also pleased to find that lovely melt-in-your-mouth gelatinous layer that forms beneath the chicken skin after it is chilled. A is freaked out by it but it's one of the most important features of a good Hainanese chicken! The breast meat is a little bit drier than I would prefer but it's just the type of dish I was craving so I was easy to please :)
Sorry, I always forget to note the prices of the dishes I ordered, it must not have been too expensive or I would have remembered better! I was probably too busy trying to convince A that we should buy some of the tapioca cake that was sitting there so invitingly on the counter. He gently pulled me out of the door before I could get it :(
Update July 09: We now have made Alice's a regular of our cheap eats, it's great for those times when you really miss Malaysian food! Managed to get my hands on some of Alice's Kuih Serimuka which was amazing and the roti was even better the last time I went. As chocolatesuze mentioned in the comments, the butter soft shell crab is amazing!

Roti canai & lamb curry
It's cold, we're wet and tired and we feel like the old faithfuls. We order and the food comes out minutes later, it's like lightning! In fact, the slowest thing to come out was my teh tarik (with a warning about that from the waitress) since they take a few minutes to make a fresh one. When it does come out it definitely hits the spot-warm and frothy. I quite like that it's not overpoweringly sweet like some of the ones you get in Malaysia (I always have to ask them to make it less sweet).I don't usually feel right having roti canai anywhere in Sydney except for Mamak, but I have a real hankering for it so we decide to order it for comparison's sake ;) It is very decent, crispy and golden on the outside. Oh it's a shame about missing the tapioca cake! The food looks quite good, especially the frothy tea.
ReplyDeleteMy favourite Malaysian place is Mamak (oh the roti!) but this nasi lemak photo is making me hungry! Something hot and spicy is definitely calling out at this time of the year!
ReplyDeleteOh! I very understand the sudden urge to eat something from Malaysia (and to eat it now!). There's something oh-so-comforting about a warm frothy teh tarik and some slippery skinned chicken on fragrant rice, isn't there?
ReplyDeleteArwen - I know! It was great cos it was just what I fancied that night, and it's so satisfying getting just what you feel like.
ReplyDeleteTrisha - I love Mamak too, their roti makes me so happy. They have great sambal too! And fried chicken *drool* I have favourite dishes at each of my usual Malaysian restaurants but no one restaurant is a favourite in particular.
shez - There is! It just hits the spot. my bf doesn't really understand the appeal of chicken rice, I guess it's something you have to grow up with?
I love the food there but it's so far away from me :( Aww there were kuih? When we went on a Sunday night they were all sold out!
ReplyDeleteone of my favourite places for Malaysian. the roti is good at Mamak but that's about it for me, Alice's seems to do much better on the other dishes as a better all-rounder for me.
ReplyDeletes :-)
Lorraine - It's okay, you've still got Ginger and Spice! Which is too far away from me since I don't have a car :( They only had the tapioca cake on Friday night, aw what a shame it was sold out!
ReplyDeleteSimon - I agree, the roti is what makes me crave Mamak more than anything else. I have favourite Malaysian and Singaporean dishes scattered all over Sydney!
Aiyahh, since your friends nick is 'A' I keep thinking you've written in fob when you start with it :P
ReplyDeleteHmm I've only been Alices once and thought it was alright (apart from their satay being wayyy too sweet) but yet to try their Hainan chicken! Must go bak!
AHAHAHA Oh no I was afraid that might happen!! I could call him AA but then it sounds like Alcoholics Anonymous LOL. Hmm I tend to avoid satay in Sydney, I'm a satay snob and will only eat it in Malaysia :D
ReplyDeleteGlad to hear that the Hainanese Chicken here is good! (that's probably one of my favourite dishes!) How was the chilli sauce that came with it? To date, I haven't been able to find a place that has good chilli sauce - the best ones I've had have been home made.
ReplyDeleteI still prefer it at Ginger and Spice but its definitely the best in that area. The chilli sauce was okay, I'm not sure but I don't think it was home made, tasted like the stuff you get at most restaurants here. I agree though, you can't beat a good homemade chilli sauce!
ReplyDeleteOmg. Look at all that chicken! Yum! I've heard many good things about Alice's, but I've never been there. I tend not to venture across the bridge!
ReplyDeleteI love Alice's! Thanks for the reminder.. haven't been there in awhile (it's a bit of a way to travel).
ReplyDeleteBetty - The portion's generous hey? Aww it's probably a bit of a journey from the other side of the bridge!
ReplyDeleteY - Hehe you're welcome :) I'm lucky it's so close to me, I don't know why I don't go more often!
hee alice is a family friend of ours so we always get heaps of kuih from her. have you tried their butter soft shell crab? zomg its to die for! we should go there dude! i live so close by!
ReplyDeleteAw that's so awesome! I haven't tried it but it sounds great, will have to give it a go next time. Yes let's do it! Let me know next time you have an Alice's craving :)
ReplyDeleteOoh that does look good. Will travel for good Hainan chicken :)
ReplyDeleteMe too :) Time to go on a Hainan chicken tour of Sydney!
